Srinagar, Sept 9 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday criticized the imposition of the Public Safety Act (PSA), saying it targeted innocent people while those who “played with religious sentiments” went unpunished.
Omar questioned the detention of MLA Mehraj Malik, asking what crime he had committed to deserve such a harsh law. “If the MLA made a mistake, it should have been addressed in the Assembly under the Speaker’s supervision, not through PSA,” he said.
He warned that such actions would erode public trust in democracy. Citing past incidents, he recalled, “On July 13, many leaders were arrested, and on July 14, even I was pushed by police. Arresting an MLA under PSA is not good for democracy.”
