Jammu, April 27: In the aftermath of the horrific terrorist attack on civilians at Pahalgam, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly will convene a special one-day session tomorrow at 10:30 am in Jammu.
The Assembly Secretariat has announced that the session will primarily focus on an “obituary reference” to mourn the lives lost in the tragic incident.
“Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather will formally address the Assembly regarding the brutal assault on innocent tourists at Baisaran, Pahalgam, on April 22, 2025,” states the official communication outlining the day’s proceedings.
The decision to summon the session followed a recommendation from the Council of Ministers, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on April 23 — a day after the attack. Acting swiftly, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, on April 25, invoked powers under Section 18(1) of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, to officially call for the Assembly to meet.
In accordance with Rule 3 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Legislative Assembly, the Secretariat issued notices to all Members of the House, requesting their presence for what is expected to be a somber yet resolute gathering.
Sources within the Assembly suggest the session will serve as a platform for lawmakers to collectively denounce the act of terror, express heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families, and reaffirm their commitment to preserving Jammu and Kashmir’s unity and the ethos of Kashmiriyat.
“Tomorrow’s session is poised to be a historic moment, allowing every political voice within the Assembly to rise in unison against terrorism,” sources said.
“While there may be differences in views during discussions, the passage of a unanimous resolution condemning terrorism is certain,” they added.
This special session comes weeks after the budget session — the first after Jammu and Kashmir’s transition into a Union Territory — was adjourned sine die by Speaker Rather on April 9.
