New Delhi, April 21 – US Vice President JD Vance began a four-day official tour of India today, accompanied by his wife Usha Vance, who has Indian roots, and their children. This marks Vice President Vance’s inaugural visit to India.
His plane touched down at the Air Force Station in Palam, New Delhi, around 9:30 am IST. A ceremonial welcome followed shortly after. Later in the evening, Vance is scheduled to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 6:30 pm at the PM’s official residence on Lok Kalyan Marg. The two leaders are expected to discuss a range of strategic issues, including trade, economic collaboration, and defense partnerships.
According to Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the visit is an important opportunity to enhance the Comprehensive Strategic Global Partnership shared by India and the US. Discussions are likely to include progress on a potential bilateral trade agreement.
“This visit reflects the strength of the relationship between our two countries,” Jaiswal stated during a recent press briefing, adding that all key matters relevant to bilateral cooperation will be addressed during the Vice President’s stay.
After official engagements in the capital, the Vance family is expected to visit Jaipur on Tuesday, followed by a trip to Agra on Wednesday. Their itinerary includes a visit to the iconic Taj Mahal, which is being specially prepared for the occasion. The monument has previously hosted several global dignitaries, including former US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
Meanwhile, the village of Vadluru in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district is filled with excitement as residents anticipate a possible visit from the Vance family. Vadluru is the ancestral home of Usha Vance (née Chilukuri), and villagers have expressed pride and enthusiasm over her return to India in an official capacity.
The Vice President is set to conclude his India visit on Thursday, April 24, with his departure scheduled for 6:40 am.
Vance’s visit to India follows his recent three-day tour of Italy, where he held bilateral meetings with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and senior church officials. He also met with Pope Francis during the Easter weekend.
