Srinagar, April 21: Police in Srinagar have cracked a recent theft case, arresting the accused and recovering a substantial portion of the stolen money, officials said on Monday.

A police spokesperson said that on April 15, 2025, Police Post Bagyas received a complaint from Tauseef Ahmad Mir, son of Mohammad Ashraf Mir, a resident of Kaksarai. In his written statement, Mir reported that nearly ₹10 lakh had been stolen from a drawer inside his shop in Kaksarai during the night of April 14–15.

Following the complaint, an FIR (No. 38/2025) was lodged at Police Station Safakadal, and a formal investigation was launched.

As part of the investigation, several individuals were questioned. Technical evidence and CCTV footage were closely examined, ultimately leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect, Umar Ahmad Mir, son of Mohammad Ashraf Mir from Chanipora, Karnah.

During questioning, Umar confessed to the crime. Police recovered ₹7,50,530 in cash, along with a scooty and a mobile phone that were purchased using the stolen money.

Further investigation is underway to trace any additional connections or recover the remaining amount, the spokesperson added.
