SRINAGAR: The body of a paratrooper who went missing during an anti-militant operation in the upper reaches of Kokernag, South Kashmir, has been recovered, officials said on Thursday.
The soldier is believed to have died after being caught in an avalanche or snowstorm that struck the high-altitude area three days ago. Officials said his rucksack and service weapon were found intact, indicating he was part of a search and cordon operation launched earlier this week.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been disclosed. According to officials, the incident occurred when a team of paratroopers operating in adverse weather conditions was hit by a sudden snowstorm, resulting in the loss of contact with two personnel.
A senior Army officer said massive search efforts are underway to trace the second missing soldier, despite rough weather and difficult terrain.
