SRINAGAR: A gun battle erupted on Wednesday between security forces and militants in the Basantgarh region of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials said the encounter began after security personnel launched a search operation based on specific intelligence inputs about suspicious movement in the area. As the forces advanced, they came under heavy fire from militants, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire.

“The firefight is ongoing,” a senior police officer confirmed, adding that the area has been completely cordoned off and additional reinforcements have been dispatched to the site.

More details are expected as the operation unfolds.
