Cyclone Ditwah has devastated parts of Sri Lanka, leaving at least 56 people dead and 23 missing as powerful winds and incessant rainfall triggered landslides and widespread destruction. Over 300 mm of rain was recorded in the last 24 hours, prompting the evacuation of nearly 44,000 residents.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on X, mourning the loss of lives and wishing a swift recovery for affected families. He affirmed India’s readiness to assist Sri Lanka as the crisis unfolds.

Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, India has already dispatched emergency relief materials and humanitarian assistance, with the Prime Minister reiterating New Delhi’s commitment to supporting its “closest maritime neighbour.”

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh remain on alert as the cyclone moves toward the Indian coastline.
