Srinagar, Sept 13: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said that sporting ties between India and Pakistan are often overshadowed by politics, particularly in cricket, which bears the brunt of strained relations between the two countries.
Commenting on the upcoming Asia Cup match between the arch-rivals, Abdullah clarified that the main concern has always been with bilateral cricket engagements, not multilateral tournaments.
“Our problem has always been with bilateral matches, I don’t think we ever had problems with multilateral tournaments. This game is part of a tournament,” Abdullah said.
He added that cricket could play a constructive role if approached positively. “If things can move in a positive direction, there is nothing like it. More often than not, sport becomes a victim of politics—nowhere is this truer than cricket in the subcontinent,” he observed.
