SRINAGAR: PDP President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday condemned the detention of Doda MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), calling it an attack on democracy.
She said the issue should have been addressed through legislative debate rather than jailing an elected representative. “Invoking PSA against an MLA is unacceptable. The Speaker should have convened an emergency session, debated the matter, and sent a resolution to Delhi—that is how democracy works,” she said.
Accusing the government of silencing dissent, Mehbooba added, “Settle political scores openly, but don’t weaken democratic institutions by targeting elected leaders.”
