Jammu & Kashmir Weather Update: The Jammu region continues to reel under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 40°C for the third consecutive day. On Sunday, June 8, Samba district recorded a searing 43.9°C, making it the hottest location in the Union Territory.
Jammu city wasn’t far behind, with the mercury touching 42.7°C. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), hot and dry winds have exacerbated the heat, severely affecting daily life and prompting many residents to remain indoors during the daytime.
The sweltering conditions also extended to Katra, the gateway for pilgrims visiting the revered Vaishno Devi shrine, where temperatures reached 38.2°C. In Reasi, the mercury climbed to 38.5°C, while Ramban, typically cooler due to its hilly terrain, registered an unusually high 40.3°C.
Kathua, often referred to as the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir, saw temperatures rise to 41.2°C, underscoring the widespread nature of the heatwave.
Even the Kashmir Valley wasn’t spared, with Srinagar recording a maximum temperature of 31.9°C, significantly higher than the seasonal norm and uncharacteristically warm for the region.
The IMD has advised residents to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and looking out for symptoms of heat-related illnesses. The heatwave is expected to persist over the next few days.
