New Delhi, May 8:
The Indian Armed Forces have carried out targeted military action against Pakistan in response to a sharp escalation of unprovoked cross-border firing that has resulted in the deaths of 16 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, Pakistan used mortars and heavy calibre artillery across multiple sectors, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri. The shelling claimed the lives of 16 innocent civilians, including three women and five children.
“In response to the loss of innocent lives and continued unprovoked aggression, India was compelled to act with appropriate force to halt the mortar and artillery fire from across the border,” said Wing Commander Singh.
Later in the day, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi provided additional details on the Indian military’s countermeasures. “This morning, the Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. The Indian response has been in the same domain with the same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised,” she said.
The Indian Armed Forces emphasised that their actions were calibrated and proportional, with the objective of deterring further aggression. They reiterated their commitment to non-escalation, provided Pakistan respects the same.
There has been no official statement from Pakistan regarding the reported targeting of its air defence infrastructure.
Tensions along the Line of Control have surged, raising concerns about the stability of the ceasefire agreement in place since 2021. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as diplomatic and security channels remain on high alert.
