SRINAGAR, April 20: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) Chief Spokesperson and MLA Tanvir Sadiq on Sunday voiced strong opposition to the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, expressing hope that the Supreme Court will intervene and put the legislation on hold.
“When the Waqf Amendment Bill was passed in Parliament, we feared it would fuel religious tensions—and that’s precisely what has unfolded,” Sadiq said. “We believe the Act fundamentally targets Muslims in India, and we urge the Supreme Court to stay its implementation.”
The Act has triggered a wave of legal challenges, with several petitions filed in the Supreme Court arguing that it discriminates against the Muslim community and violates constitutional rights.
Prominent petitioners include AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress leaders Mohammad Jawed and Imran Pratapgarhi, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan, Azad Samaj Party President Chandra Shekhar Azad, Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq, Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani, and several Muslim religious and civil rights organisations such as the Indian Union Muslim League, Samastha Kerala Jamiatul Ulema, and the Association for Protection of Civil Rights.
Despite the backlash, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was passed in both Houses of Parliament amid intense debate and received presidential assent from President Droupadi Murmu on April 5.
In support of the legislation, BJP-ruled state governments in Rajasthan, Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh have submitted impleadment applications to the court. Several advocates and groups representing tribal and Hindu interests have also filed applications backing the Act.( ANI)
