Dhaka:
Bangladeshi authorities have officially requested Interpol to issue a red notice for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 11 others, in connection with accusations of attempting to destabilize the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

A red notice from Interpol acts as an international alert to locate and temporarily detain individuals who are wanted for extradition or similar legal proceedings.

Speaking to the media, Enamul Haque Sagor, Assistant Inspector General (Media) at the Bangladesh Police Headquarters, confirmed the request. “Such applications are made based on findings from investigations or developments in active cases,” he said, as cited by Dhaka Tribune.

He added that the request is still being processed.

The initiative follows a formal appeal made in November of the previous year by the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of the International Crimes Tribunal, which urged police to collaborate with Interpol to apprehend Hasina and the other accused, who are reportedly on the run.

According to Sagor, Interpol plays a crucial role in identifying the whereabouts of fugitives living abroad. “Once someone’s location is verified, that information is shared with Interpol to move forward with the legal procedures,” he explained.

If Interpol approves the red notice, it could pave the way for the provisional arrest and eventual extradition of the accused individuals.
