Srinagar, Dec 19: After more than two months of dry weather, Jammu and Kashmir is likely to receive rain and snowfall over the next 48 hours, the Meteorological Department said on Friday.
Director MeT Mukhtar Ahmad said moderate snowfall is expected in the higher reaches, while rain will occur in the plains from late evening of December 20 to the afternoon of December 21. Some areas in the higher reaches of Ganderbal, Bandipora and Kupwara districts may witness heavy snowfall, particularly on December 21.
Authorities in Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal have issued advisories urging residents of higher areas to avoid unnecessary movement during the snowfall.
The prolonged dry spell has severely affected rivers, streams, springs and lakes, reducing water discharge across the region. It has also led to a rise in chest-related ailments, with cases of cold, dry cough and flu being widely reported in hospitals across the Valley.
