Srinagar: The Drug and Food Administration (DFA), Jammu and Kashmir, has launched an investigation into reports of adulterated eggs, with Commissioner Smita Sethi urging the public to remain calm and avoid unnecessary panic.
Sethi said a special drive to collect egg samples is underway and will continue for the next two to three days. The samples will be tested in accredited laboratories to assess their safety. “Let the laboratory reports come. We are actively working on the issue and will inform the public accordingly,” she said.
Clarifying the reports circulating on social media, the Commissioner stated that no eggs from the company Eggoz have been found in Kashmir so far. “We do not even know the source of these reports,” she added.
The DFA is also examining poultry feed, including the use of antibiotics. Sethi said antibiotics are allowed only within prescribed limits and any violation will attract strict action. She noted that it may take at least two weeks for a clear picture to emerge on whether the issue is isolated or widespread.
Referring to past actions, Sethi said the department regularly conducts tests and has previously taken action against specific batches of products such as Priya Gold biscuits and Ajwa drinking water. She emphasized that adulteration is addressed batch-wise and district-wise, and does not necessarily indicate that an entire product line is unsafe.
“A UT-wide ban is imposed only if contamination is established on a large scale. If required, I will personally issue such an order,” she said.
Reiterating DFA’s commitment to transparency, Sethi assured that the public will be informed of any confirmed violations and appealed once again for calm as investigations continue.
