Washington/New Delhi, August 3:
U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday welcomed unconfirmed reports suggesting that India may halt its oil imports from Russia, calling it a “positive step” if proven true.
“I heard India may stop buying oil from Russia. If true, that’s a positive step,” Trump told reporters during a campaign event, hinting at his continued interest in global energy alignments and geopolitical strategies involving key U.S. allies.
The remarks come amid speculation in global markets over a potential shift in India’s oil sourcing strategy. However, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was quick to offer a measured response.
Responding to media queries, an MEA spokesperson said that decisions related to oil imports are guided by market dynamics and global economic trends, rather than political pressures.
“There is no policy change at this time. India’s energy decisions are based on national interest and market conditions,” the spokesperson clarified, without directly addressing Trump’s comment.
The MEA also reaffirmed the strength of India-U.S. relations, noting that the partnership has withstood various global challenges and continues to progress constructively.
