SRINAGAR, May 14: The Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is in the process of setting up various House Committees, including three vital financial bodies, according to official sources.
The Assembly Secretariat has initiated the procedure for constituting these committees as per the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the House.
“Political parties have been asked to submit names of their legislators for inclusion in the committees,” sources revealed, noting that each party’s representation will reflect its numerical strength in the Assembly.
A total of 13 House Committees are to be established, each tasked with a specific legislative or oversight function. The first to be formed will be the three major financial panels: the Estimates Committee, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), and the Committee on Public Undertakings (COPU).
These financial committees are essential in evaluating public spending, examining audit reports, and reviewing the performance of government undertakings—thereby enhancing legislative oversight and accountability.
The move is being viewed as a step forward in strengthening institutional mechanisms within the Assembly.
