Dhaka, June 1 — Bangladesh’s domestic International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has formally charged former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with crimes against humanity for her alleged role in the violent crackdown on last year’s student-led uprising that ultimately forced her resignation.
The charges, filed by prosecutors on Sunday, accuse the 77-year-old leader of orchestrating and facilitating state-sponsored violence during the July 2024 protests. Hasina, who is currently in self-imposed exile in India, is alleged to have “directly ordered” operations by security forces, ruling party cadres, and affiliated groups that resulted in mass civilian casualties.
According to the prosecution, Hasina is being charged with “abetment, incitement, complicity, facilitation, conspiracy, and failure to prevent mass murder.”
