Srinagar, Nov 20: The University of Kashmir on Thursday inaugurated its annual youth festival Sonzal-2025 at the Main Campus.

Organised by the Division of Youth Affairs under the Department of Students Welfare (DSW), the week-long intra-university festival (Nov 20–27) brings together students from various departments and affiliated colleges for competitions in literature, culture and fine arts. Events include quiz, debate, elocution, collage and poster making, painting, rangoli, cartooning, clay modelling, Indian and Western vocals, and more.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, in her inaugural address, said the festival reflects the creative and intellectual aspirations of students. “Sonzal strengthens platforms for young people to express themselves, learn collectively and take pride in their abilities,” she said, adding that such events enhance teamwork, confidence and essential life skills.

Dean Academic Affairs Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, Dean Research Prof. Mohammad Sultan Bhat, Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal, and Controller of Examinations Prof. Majid Zaman Baba also highlighted the festival’s role in encouraging students to explore ideas and talents beyond academics.

Earlier, Dean DSW Prof. Pervez Ahmed welcomed participants and outlined the festival’s objectives. The ceremony featured soulful performances by the Sufi Brothers of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages and the University’s Pashmina Band.

The inaugural day included a painting competition showcasing students’ artistic creativity. The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Shahid Ali Khan, Cultural Officer, DSW KU and organising secretary of the event.

The festival is sponsored by J&K Bank, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, and Cemtac Cements.
