Srinagar, Aug 14: The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Thursday trapped and arrested Aamir Farooq Sheikh, a Junior Engineer with the Rural Development Department, Shopian, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹20,000.

According to an ACB spokesperson, the bureau received a written complaint alleging that a payment of ₹7.5 lakh, pertaining to works executed by the complainant, was pending with the Rural Development Department. The accused official allegedly demanded ₹20,000 to facilitate the release of the payment.

Refusing to succumb to the demand, the complainant approached the ACB, which, after discreet verification, registered FIR No. 04/2025 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, at Police Station ACB Anantnag.

A trap team, accompanied by independent witnesses, was constituted to carry out the operation. “During the proceedings, the accused JE was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe amount of ₹20,000, which was recovered from his possession in the presence of witnesses. He was arrested on the spot,” the spokesperson said.

Following the arrest, the ACB conducted searches at the engineer’s residences in Kachdoora, Shopian, and Kanipora, Nowgam, Srinagar. The searches were still underway when the report was filed.

The ACB said further investigation in the case is in progress.
