SRINAGAR, May 16: A police officer allegedly shot his wife dead following a domestic quarrel before attempting to end his own life in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Deep Singh, a probationary sub-inspector (PSI) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, was posted at a Special Operations Group (SOG) camp in the Kandi area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

According to officials, Singh had a heated argument with his wife, Bhawana, late on Friday night. During the altercation, he allegedly opened fire on her in a fit of rage, killing her on the spot.

After the incident, Singh reportedly attempted suicide by shooting himself. He was critically injured and was shifted to a hospital for treatment, officials added.

Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated further investigation.
