SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has called for broadening the distribution of modern steel carpet looms among artisans in Kashmir, stating that the current plan to provide 100 looms should be expanded following an evaluation of their effectiveness.
Welcoming the initiative undertaken by the Jammu and Kashmir government through the Industries and Commerce Department and the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT), the KCCI highlighted the advantages of these modern looms over traditional ones, particularly in terms of mobility and ergonomics, which can enhance artisans’ efficiency and comfort.
The IICT recently conducted a ‘Draw of Lots’ to select 100 active registered carpet weavers eligible to receive the looms. However, the KCCI stressed that more artisans should be included in the initiative once the looms are assessed for their effectiveness.
Carpet weaving has been a vital part of Kashmir’s economy for generations, supporting thousands of livelihoods. The KCCI emphasized that the adoption of modern technology could significantly boost productivity and refine craftsmanship within the industry.
