Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Sunday informed the Legislative Assembly that the Union Territory has a total of 58,034 kanals of nazool land, of which 5,618 kanals were leased out for commercial purposes prior to the 2019 reorganisation.
According to data tabled by the Revenue Department, Jammu Division holds 50,343 kanals of nazool land, while Kashmir Division accounts for 7,690 kanals. Of the land leased for commercial use, 529 kanals are in Jammu Division and 5,088 kanals in Kashmir Division.
The government also disclosed that 346 commercial lease cases have expired, including 130 in Jammu Division and 215 in Kashmir Division, and are awaiting further action.
While citing the Jammu and Kashmir Land Grants Rules, 2022 as the governing framework for fresh leases and auctions, the reply did not specify any timeline for resolving the expired lease cases. Nor did it provide details on how many cases have been renewed, rejected, or remain pending at the district level.
