Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir — Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) President Farooq Abdullah has come out in support of the Centre’s decision to conduct a caste-based census, emphasizing the need for accurate demographic data of all religious communities in the country.

Speaking on the matter, Abdullah said, “Some say there are 11 crore Muslims, some say 12 crore, 14 crore, or even 22 crore. At the very least, we should know the actual numbers. How is there anything wrong in that? We should know how many Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians there are.”

The veteran leader’s remarks come amid a growing national debate over the proposed caste census, with several political parties either supporting or opposing the move based on its potential social and political implications.

Abdullah’s statement aligns with voices advocating for greater transparency and inclusivity in the national data to ensure equitable policy-making and resource distribution.
