Kathua, Aug 17: At least seven people were killed and five others injured in two separate incidents of cloudburst and landslide triggered by heavy overnight rains in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, officials said.
The cloudburst struck Jodh Ghati village in Rajbagh, leaving five people dead, damaging several houses, and cutting off access to the area. A joint rescue operation by police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local volunteers is underway. Five injured persons have been shifted to hospital for treatment.
In a separate incident, two people lost their lives after a landslide struck Janglote area of the district.
Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Rajesh Sharma, along with senior civil and police officers, rushed to the affected areas to oversee relief and rescue measures.
Officials said landslides were also reported from Bagard, Changda, and Dilwan-Hutli areas under Kathua and Lakhanpur jurisdictions, but no major damage has been recorded there.
Rescue teams continue to clear debris and restore connectivity to the affected villages.
