A Border Security Force (BSF) constable has been detained by Pakistani Rangers after he inadvertently crossed the international border near Firozpur in Punjab, officials said on Thursday.
According to reports cited by news agency PTI, talks are currently underway between the two forces to secure his release.
The BSF jawan, identified as Constable P.K. Singh of the 182nd Battalion, was taken into custody on Wednesday. He reportedly crossed the border while accompanying a group of farmers and had moved ahead to rest in the shade. At the time of the incident, Singh was in uniform and carrying his service rifle.
Officials noted that such incidents have occurred in the past and are typically resolved through established communication channels between the two sides.
The development comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, following a recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam.
On Wednesday, India announced a series of diplomatic measures against Pakistan, citing the country’s alleged support for cross-border terrorism. These measures include downgrading diplomatic ties, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, reducing staff at the Islamabad mission, and expelling Pakistan’s military attachés.
The diplomatic steps follow one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years. On April 22, terrorists linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam, killing at least 26 people, including several foreign nationals, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a known Lashkar-e-Taiba offshoot, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
