Guwahati, April 24, 2025 – Aminul Islam, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), was arrested today on charges of sedition after allegedly defending Pakistan’s involvement in the recent Pahalgam terror attack. The arrest comes amid growing political tensions in Assam, following statements by the MLA that were perceived as supportive of Pakistan’s alleged complicity in the deadly assault.
Islam’s remarks, made during a recent public address, have drawn sharp criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and local law enforcement, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma calling the statements “unacceptable” and accusing Islam of sowing discord and supporting anti-national elements.
“Such statements that defend or justify Pakistan’s role in terror activities have no place in a democratic society,” said CM Sarma in a press conference today. “We will not tolerate any form of sedition, especially when it undermines national security and the sentiments of the people of Assam.”
The Pahalgam terror attack, which took place earlier this month, claimed the lives of 26 civilians, shaking the region. Authorities believe the attack to be orchestrated by militants with ties to Pakistan-based terror groups, further fueling tensions in the state.
In a related development, Chief Minister Sarma also announced a financial ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of all 26 victims killed in the Pahalgam attack. The compensation is part of the state’s efforts to provide assistance and support to the affected families during this tragic time.
“The loss of 26 innocent lives is a blow to the entire nation, and we stand with the victims’ families in their time of grief,” CM Sarma added. “The government is committed to ensuring justice for those affected by this heinous act.”
Islam’s arrest has sparked reactions from political opponents, particularly from the AIUDF, who argue that the charges against the MLA are politically motivated and aimed at silencing dissent. The AIUDF has demanded immediate release of the MLA, asserting that his remarks were taken out of context.
As the investigation continues, the incident has amplified the ongoing debate over national security, free speech, and the political divide in Assam.
