SRINAGAR: The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), an umbrella body of Muslim organizations, has condemned the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party’s lone J&K MLA, Mehraj-ud-Din Malik, under the Public Safety Act (PSA).AIMMM acting president Naveed Hamid termed the move “painful and shameful,” calling it a direct assault on democratic values. He noted that Malik’s dispute with the Deputy Commissioner of Doda ended with the legislator being dragged into a police van and jailed.Hamid said legal remedies could have addressed the issue instead of invoking PSA, which Amnesty International has described as “draconian.” He added that this is the first case of an elected representative booked under PSA since the abrogation of Article 370, reflecting “utter disregard for democracy” in the region.
