Kananaskis, Alberta – A group of Khalistani extremists staged what they described as an “ambush” protest against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Canada today for the second leg of his ongoing three-nation tour. Modi is visiting Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia, and is in Canada to participate in the G7 summit.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as well as with his counterparts from Germany, Italy, and Ukraine on the sidelines of the summit.

According to Canadian journalist Daniel Bordman, Khalistani separatists gathered in Calgary ahead of Modi’s arrival, staging aggressive anti-India demonstrations. Protesters reportedly called on Prime Minister Carney to “kill Modi politics” and on U.S. President Donald Trump to “kill India politics,” while some even issued provocative calls to “Balkanise India.”

Bordman reported that the demonstrations turned increasingly hostile, with participants tearing and stomping on the Indian national flag—actions he described as a frequent feature of such protests. “Three microphones were blaring at once, each trying to drown the other out. The air was filled with incoherent shouting,” he said.

The protest also featured a new anti-Modi song that, according to Bordman, pushed the boundaries of what is legally acceptable under Canadian law.

The Indian government has not officially responded to the protest reports, but security around the Prime Minister remains tight, with Canadian authorities coordinating closely with Indian security personnel.

The Khalistan movement—seeking a separate Sikh homeland—has long been a sensitive point in India-Canada relations, with New Delhi often raising concerns over extremist elements operating from Canadian soil.

PM Modi’s visit is expected to focus on strengthening economic and strategic ties with Canada and other G7 participants, while also addressing pressing global issues including climate change, geopolitical stability, and economic cooperation.
