MAY 5- The Supreme Court of India has scheduled a hearing on May 15 for petitions challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The case will be heard by a bench led by Justice BR Gavai, who is set to take office as Chief Justice of India on May 14, following the retirement of the current CJI, Sanjiv Khanna, on May 13.
Chief Justice Khanna, while reviewing the matter, emphasized that any interim orders would require a thorough hearing. He indicated that the case would be best heard by Justice Gavai’s bench, which was subsequently scheduled for May 15.
The batch of petitions filed against the Act argues that it is discriminatory towards the Muslim community and violates their fundamental rights. The petitions also raise concerns regarding the registration of Waqf properties, which are central to the case.
