April 29, 2025 | Moscow– Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a three-day ceasefire in the ongoing war with Ukraine, set to take place in May. The temporary truce is intended to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union and its allies’ victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

The Kremlin stated that the ceasefire will serve as a gesture of historical remembrance and a call for reflection amid the current conflict. The pause in hostilities is scheduled around May 9, a date celebrated in Russia as Victory Day.

Ukrainian officials have yet to respond to the announcement formally. Previous ceasefire attempts in the nearly three-year-long war have often failed to hold due to violations from both sides.

Analysts say the move could be symbolic, aimed at reinforcing domestic unity and international messaging as Russia prepares for the major commemorations.

The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has caused tens of thousands of deaths and widespread destruction, with no end to the conflict currently in sight.
