COLOMBO, Nov 30: Authorities on Sunday issued flood alerts for several eastern suburbs of Sri Lanka’s capital as the island nation continues to grapple with catastrophic flooding, landslides, and widespread destruction triggered by Cyclone Ditwah.
Colombo District Secretary Prasanna Ginige said the warnings were prompted by a dangerous rise in the water levels of the Kelani River. Schools located in high-risk zones have been converted into temporary relief centres to shelter displaced families, he added.
Residents in the affected areas have been urged to evacuate immediately. However, officials expressed concern over the noticeable reluctance among some people to comply with evacuation orders.
