Guwahati: In a major drug bust, Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) seized drugs worth Rs 71 crore in two separate operations in Kamrup district on Friday. The haul included 2,70,000 methamphetamine tablets (Yaba) and 520 grams of heroin. The drugs were found in a truck and a Hyundai car, both of which were intercepted while traveling from a neighboring state.
The two arrested drivers, identified as Nur Islam (34) and Nazrul Hussain alias Ali Hussain (22), were taken into custody under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The STF had acted on a tip-off and carried out the operation in the Amingaon area, recovering the illicit substances hidden in soap boxes.
The methamphetamine tablets, also known as party pills, and the heroin are believed to have originated from Myanmar. The drugs were likely being smuggled through Assam for distribution in India or neighboring Bangladesh. Myanmar, with its extensive border with northeastern Indian states, has long been a key transit point for smuggling drugs like heroin and methamphetamine.
The STF operation was led by Parthasarathi Mahanta, STF chief, with assistance from Additional Superintendent of Police, Kalyan Pathak. Authorities have initiated legal proceedings, and investigations are ongoing.
