Jammu, May 31: Jammu and Kashmir Transport Minister Satish Sharma has urged Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to accelerate efforts for extending railway connectivity to the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. The minister called for a fresh feasibility study and sought priority status for the proposed Jammu–Akhnoor–Rajouri–Poonch rail corridor.
In a communication to the Union Railway Minister, Sharma emphasized the strategic, economic, and social significance of the proposed railway line, stating that improved rail connectivity would greatly benefit residents of the Pir Panjal region and strengthen regional development.
The minister highlighted that Rajouri and Poonch remain among the few districts in Jammu and Kashmir without rail access, despite their importance in terms of population, tourism, trade, and national security. He said that the proposed corridor would not only enhance transportation facilities but also boost economic activities, create employment opportunities, and improve access to essential services.
Sharma requested the Ministry of Railways to undertake a fresh feasibility assessment of the project in light of recent technological advancements and changing infrastructure requirements. He also urged the Centre to accord priority status to the rail corridor so that the long-pending demand of the people of Rajouri and Poonch can be fulfilled at the earliest.
The proposed Jammu–Akhnoor–Rajouri–Poonch rail link has been a longstanding demand of local residents and public representatives, who believe that railway connectivity would significantly improve mobility and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.
The matter is expected to receive attention as the government continues to focus on expanding rail infrastructure and enhancing connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.
