ew Delhi, May 31: General NS Raja Subramani on Sunday assumed office as India’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding General Anil Chauhan, who completed his tenure as the country’s senior-most military commander on Saturday.
A highly respected military strategist and expert on Pakistan and China, Gen Subramani takes over at a crucial time when the Indian Armed Forces are pursuing major reforms aimed at enhancing jointness and operational efficiency among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Prior to his appointment as CDS, Gen Subramani served as the Military Advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). He retired from active military service as the Vice Chief of Army Staff on July 31 last year.
As the new CDS, Gen Subramani’s foremost responsibility will be to drive the implementation of the government’s ambitious military theatreisation plan. The initiative seeks to establish integrated theatre commands, enabling better coordination and synergy among the three services for future warfare and national security challenges.
With an illustrious military career spanning over four decades, Gen Subramani has held a wide range of command, staff, and instructional appointments across diverse operational environments and conflict zones. His extensive experience includes serving as Vice Chief of Army Staff from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025, and as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024.
Defence analysts believe Gen Subramani’s deep understanding of India’s strategic environment and his experience in handling complex security challenges will be instrumental in advancing military reforms and strengthening India’s defence preparedness.
His appointment marks a significant step in the ongoing transformation of India’s armed forces as they adapt to evolving regional and global security dynamics.
