Kolkata, May 31: Four persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district, police said on Sunday.
According to a senior police officer, the arrests were made during overnight raids conducted on the basis of video footage and other evidence collected from the area following the incident.
The attack took place on Saturday when Banerjee was visiting Sonarpur town. A large group of people allegedly hurled stones and eggs at the TMC leader while also shouting abuses. The sudden attack created tension in the area and disrupted the programme.
Banerjee managed to escape unharmed with the assistance of his aides. In dramatic scenes, he was seen wearing a cricket helmet for protection as security personnel and party workers escorted him away from the hostile crowd.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident and are examining video recordings to identify other individuals involved in the attack. Security arrangements in the area have also been strengthened to prevent any further disturbances.
The incident has sparked political reactions, with the ruling Trinamool Congress condemning the attack and demanding strict action against those responsible.
