SRINAGAR: The Government of India has set up the Eighth Central Pay Commission (8th CPC) to revise the pay, pensions, and allowances of around 50 lakh central employees and 69 lakh pensioners.

Headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, the first woman to lead a pay panel, the commission includes IIM Bangalore Professor Pulak Ghosh and Petroleum Secretary Pankaj Jain as members.

The panel will recommend a rational, performance-linked pay structure aligned with private sector standards while ensuring fiscal discipline. It will also review the service conditions of industrial, non-industrial, and defence personnel, and suggest changes for central public sector enterprises.

The commission has 18 months to submit its report, with the revised pay scales expected to be implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2026.
