Srinagar, Oct 31: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) for the development of the Srinagar Water Metro—a first-of-its-kind project in the region inspired by the Kochi Water Metro model.
The ambitious project aims to improve connectivity across the Dal Lake and River Jhelum, easing road congestion and promoting sustainable urban transport within Srinagar city. Officials said the water-based transport network will integrate with existing road systems to provide a seamless commuting experience for residents and tourists alike.
“The Srinagar Water Metro will not only boost connectivity but also enhance tourism potential and contribute to environmental conservation,” a government spokesperson said.
A similar initiative is also being planned for the Jammu region, with potential sites such as Akhnoor and Reasi identified for the project’s expansion.
The MoU marks a significant step toward modern, eco-friendly mobility solutions in the Union Territory, aligning with the government’s broader vision of sustainable infrastructure development.
