SRINAGAR: In a bid to curb fraudulent SIM card practices, police in the Handwara area of north Kashmir conducted a district-wide inspection of SIM card vendors to ensure compliance with regulatory norms.

According to a police spokesperson, special teams were deployed to verify that vendors were strictly following Know Your Customer (KYC) guidelines and documentation procedures mandated by the Department of Telecommunications. The exercise aims to ensure that SIM cards are issued only after proper verification and to prevent misuse.

During the inspections, vendors were reminded of mandatory requirements, including biometric Aadhaar verification for both customers and vendors, the physical presence of customers during SIM issuance, activation only after confirmation via an alternate phone number, prohibition on pre-activated SIM cards, installation of CCTV cameras at outlets, and proper maintenance of electronic billing records.
