SRINAGAR, Sept 23: An Army soldier died under mysterious circumstances after sustaining a gunshot wound in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, prompting a police investigation.

According to official sources, the incident took place in the Military Hospital area of Udhampur, where the soldier was posted as a driver for a supply vehicle transporting medicines. He was discovered inside his 407 Army supply truck with a fatal gunshot injury.Fellow soldiers and eyewitnesses rushed to the scene after hearing the gunfire, but the soldier succumbed to his injuries before medical help could reach him.

Preliminary reports indicate the firing may have been accidental; however, investigators are not ruling out the possibility of suicide. “The exact cause is yet to be ascertained. Both accidental discharge and self-inflicted injury are under investigation,” a police official said.
