September 24:Leh witnessed violent protests on Tuesday as supporters of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) gathered outside the BJP office during a region-wide shutdown. The agitation was called in response to the Centre’s delay in resuming “result-oriented” talks on Ladakh’s long-pending demands, including Statehood and Sixth Schedule status.
In view of the unrest, Leh’s District Magistrate imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, which prohibits the assembly of more than four people, citing potential threats to public order and safety.
Preliminary reports indicate that large numbers of LAB supporters—an amalgam of religious, social, and political organisations—assembled outside the BJP office to press for the immediate fulfillment of their demands. Statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule remain at the forefront of the agitation.
