Srinagar: CPI(M) MLA M.Y. Tarigami on Thursday voiced grave concern over the deteriorating state of press freedom in Jammu and Kashmir, urging the government to safeguard the rights and security of journalists in the region.
Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, Tarigami said that the declining press freedom index and the restricted media environment in the Union Territory were deeply worrying. “In any society where the press is suppressed, divisive forces tend to rise,” he cautioned.
The veteran legislator highlighted that four journalists are currently behind bars in Jammu and Kashmir — a situation he described as “a matter of deep concern.”
Criticizing the government’s approach to media affairs, Tarigami said the absence of a clear and transparent advertisement policy has further complicated matters for local media outlets. “The Information Department appears confused, just as it was before the elections. Files related to advertisements are lying pending, and even the issue of Gulistan News remains unresolved,” he remarked.
Urging the administration to take immediate corrective measures, Tarigami stressed the need for an independent and transparent media framework. “We must ensure freedom of the press and protection for reporters. What we need is a comprehensive and transparent media policy that supports independent journalism and strengthens democratic accountability,” he said.
Tarigami’s remarks come amid growing concerns from journalists and press bodies over increasing curbs on the media landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.
