June 17: Amid ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran, India has initiated the first phase of evacuating its citizens from the region. As part of the operation, 110 Indian medical students — including seven from Jammu and Kashmir — have been successfully evacuated from Urmia Medical University in Iran and are now safe in Armenia.
According to Nasir Khumani, National Convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), the group crossed the Iran-Armenia land border overnight and is currently travelling by road to the Armenian capital, Yerevan.
“They are expected to reach Yerevan around noon,” Khumani said, after speaking with several of the students during their journey.
The Indian Embassy in Yerevan has arranged further travel assistance. The students are scheduled to board a chartered flight to New Delhi on Wednesday. Upon arrival, they will be assisted in returning to their respective home states, including Jammu and Kashmir.
