Srinagar, Feb 23 – People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has called on Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the Speaker of the Assembly to support three crucial private member bills aimed at addressing issues related to daily wagers, land rights, and the prohibition of alcohol in Kashmir.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Mufti emphasized that the Speaker’s role is to protect the rights of assembly members rather than suppress their voices. The bills are expected to be tabled in the upcoming budget session, set to commence on March 3.
“I urge CM Omar Abdullah and the Speaker of the Assembly to respect members’ bills and refrain from intimidating them into silence. These issues directly impact the people of J&K and must be addressed in the House,” Mufti stated.
The PDP leader is advocating three key legislative changes:
- Regularization of Daily Wagers: A bill proposing job security and stability for daily wagers who have been working for at least 25 years without permanent employment.
- Land Rights for Long-Term Occupants: Legislation aimed at granting land ownership to individuals who have been residing on government land for decades.
- Ban on Alcohol in Kashmir: A proposed law seeking to prohibit alcohol sales in the region, citing Kashmir’s Muslim-majority demographic and the rising concerns over youth addiction. This move aligns with the PDP’s ongoing campaign against substance abuse, which was launched by Mufti’s daughter, Iltija Mufti.
Mufti also criticized CM Omar Abdullah for avoiding discussions on key political issues such as Article 370 and statehood restoration despite holding a strong majority in the assembly.
“Omar Abdullah has 50 MLAs and three parliamentarians, yet he refuses to engage in meaningful discussions on issues like Article 370 and statehood. Meanwhile, our youth continue to languish in jails,” she remarked.
