July 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 74, has surpassed Indira Gandhi to become India’s second-longest serving PM in consecutive terms, with 4,078 days in office as of Friday. Modi first took oath on May 26, 2014, and has completed 11 years and 60 days in office, edging past Gandhi’s 11 years and 59 days.
Jawaharlal Nehru remains the longest-serving PM with 16 years and 286 days in office.
Modi is also the longest-serving non-Congress PM, the first born after Independence, and the only non-Congress leader to complete two full terms and win three consecutive general elections with a majority. He has led his party to six consecutive electoral victories—three in Gujarat (2002, 2007, 2012) and three in Lok Sabha polls (2014, 2019, 2024)—marking nearly 24 years as head of an elected government.
