May 20 — Acting on a directive from the Supreme Court, the Madhya Pradesh Police late Monday night constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe state minister Vijay Shah’s alleged derogatory remarks against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi.
The SIT comprises Inspector General of Police (Sagar Range) Pramod Verma, Deputy Inspector General (SAF, Bhopal) Kalyan Chakravarty, and Superintendent of Police (Dindori) Vahini Singh. The formation of the team was ordered by state Director General of Police Kailash Makwana to ensure compliance with the apex court’s instructions.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court took strong exception to Shah’s remarks, describing them as “crass,” and directed the DGP to constitute a special probe team by 10 a.m. Tuesday. The court also mandated that the SIT include a woman officer. The investigation stems from an FIR registered against Shah following an order by the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
The controversy erupted after a video surfaced showing the minister allegedly making objectionable comments about Col Qureshi. The clip quickly went viral, sparking widespread criticism. Col Qureshi rose to national prominence alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh during media briefings on Operation Sindoor.
