Srinagar, May 5: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) have strongly condemned the alleged rape and subsequent death of a tribal woman in the Nishat area of Srinagar, calling the incident a reflection of the deep moral and ethical crisis facing society.
In a statement issued on Monday, the MMU expressed profound grief and outrage, terming the act as a “barbaric crime” and urging the authorities to ensure swift and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
“This is not just a heinous act against an individual but a disturbing symbol of the spiritual and moral decline gripping our society,” the statement said.
The MMU cited rampant digital obscenity, widespread drug abuse, and the growing culture of materialism and ethical decay as root causes behind the increasing moral collapse. “The unchecked spread of vulgarity through digital media and the prevalence of intoxicants have weakened the foundations of our collective conscience,” the statement noted.
The religious body, led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, called on people to return to the path of faith, ethics, and social responsibility as taught by Islam. “It is time for deep societal introspection, repentance, and reform,” the MMU said.
Extending condolences to the victim’s family, the MMU prayed for her maghfirah (forgiveness) and a high place in Jannat-ul-Firdous.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which has sparked widespread outrage across the Valley.
