Kulgam, Oct 10: In a significant step towards promoting girls’ education in Kulgam district, Minister Sakeena Itoo on Friday inaugurated a 100-bedded Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) girls’ hostel at D.H. Pora. The hostel, constructed at a cost of ₹2.85 crore, aims to provide safe accommodation and better educational facilities to Scheduled Tribe (ST) and underprivileged girls of the region.
Speaking at the inauguration, the minister said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to empowering girls through education and ensuring equitable access to learning opportunities for students from marginalized communities.
Later, Minister Itoo laid the foundation stone for additional classrooms at Government High School Watoo, a move expected to strengthen the educational infrastructure in the area.
“The government is focused on improving educational facilities in far-flung areas so that no child is deprived of quality education due to geographical or financial constraints,” she said.
Local residents and education officials expressed gratitude for the development projects, noting that the new infrastructure will significantly enhance learning conditions and encourage higher enrollment among girls in the district.
The events mark another step in the ongoing efforts to uplift the education sector in Kulgam and promote gender-inclusive growth in the Union Territory.
