Srinagar, Oct 02: The University of Kashmir (KU) on Thursday concluded the Sewa Parv 2025 celebrations with a vibrant programme of cultural and creative activities, marking the culmination of a fortnight-long observance that began on September 17 and concluded on Gandhi Jayanti.
The valedictory event, organised by KU’s Department of Students’ Welfare (DSW) in collaboration with Shri Pran Kishor Koul Institute of Music and Fine Arts (IMFA), was held at the university’s main campus.
The day’s highlights included the unveiling of a wall painting on themes of environment, youth power and patriotism; a symposium on “Gandhian Vision of Sewa: Relevance in Today’s World”; a homage to Mahatma Gandhi; the launch of the Sonzal-2025 poster; and a colourful cultural programme presented by students.
Speaking on the occasion, KU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan said the activities underscored the role of art, dialogue and collective participation in fostering a deeper understanding of service and responsibility in contemporary society. “They also reinforce the continued relevance of Gandhi’s vision in the present times,” she noted.
The Vice-Chancellor, along with faculty members and students, offered floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. Among those present were Controller of Examinations KU, Prof. Majid-uz-Zaman; Dean DSW KU, Prof. Pervez Ahmed; Provost Boys KU, Prof. Meraj Ahmed; Principal IMFA, Dr. Habeeb Ullah; Cultural Officer KU, Dr. Shahid Ali Khan; hostel wardens and a large number of students.
Prof. Majid-uz-Zaman remarked that the celebrations provided students with a meaningful platform to engage with Gandhi’s philosophy and reflect on its contemporary significance. Prof. Pervez Ahmed said the initiative encouraged students to blend academic learning with community engagement, while Dr. Habeeb Ullah highlighted the role of artistic expression in promoting Gandhian ideals of peace, unity and harmony.
The concluding programme was coordinated by Dr. Shahid Ali Khan, Cultural Officer, DSW. Students participated enthusiastically in all activities, making the day a lively showcase of creativity, reflection and collective spirit.
Throughout the fortnight, KU remained deeply committed to the ethos of Sewa Parv, ensuring broad-based participation across departments and campuses. Units including the Central Library, Department of Home Science, Department of Social Work, NSS Wing, University Hostels, Landscape Division, Chief Proctor’s Wing, Directorate of Lifelong Learning, Satellite Campuses and the University Model School actively contributed to the initiative.
