SRINAGAR: The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) on Tuesday demanded a judicial inquiry into the recent violence in Ladakh that left four dead and dozens injured, while calling for the release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and other detained youth leaders.
At a press conference in New Delhi, senior KDA leaders, including Asghar Karbalai, Sajjad Kargali, MP Haji Hanifa Jan, and civil society members, accused the government of suppressing peaceful protests seeking statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh.Karbalai said the violence in Leh was “an attack on democracy,” urging the probe be led by a sitting or retired judge.
The leaders announced they would suspend dialogue with the Ministry of Home Affairs until cases against their members were withdrawn and detainees freed.
They condemned Wangchuk’s detention, calling it unjust and politically motivated. “His only crime is speaking for Ladakh and its fragile environment,” Karbalai said, adding that silencing a globally respected activist showed the government’s “muzzling of voices.
”The KDA also accused the Centre of reneging on promises made after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, alleging that even former BJP supporters were now being targeted under UAPA and NSA for questioning policies.
